Streamlining Asset Inspection & Data Insights for Infrastructure Asset Management

R&D Programme

Jun 23, 2025

This programme was initiated to address longstanding inefficiencies in how infrastructure assets are inspected, maintained, and managed. The programme sought to modernise asset lifecycle practices by integrating digital technologies, data-driven methodologies, and operational simplification strategies.

This large-scale R&D initiative focused on developing scalable solutions that would empower asset managers, engineers, and facilities teams to conduct inspections with greater precision, reduce administrative burden, and make informed decisions that extend the life and performance of critical infrastructure.

The programme was initially focused on supporting bridge infrastructure and has since expanded to encompass a broader range of asset types, including buildings, tunnels, platforms, and public facilities. This expansion was driven by the development of tools and frameworks that facilitate real-time condition inspections, streamlined reporting, and predictive maintenance planning.

Programme Objectives

Simplify Inspections: Develop methodologies and digital workflows to reduce complexity and manual effort in routine inspections, testing, and verification processes across diverse infrastructure assets.

Maximise Asset Lifecycle: Create systems that support proactive maintenance and lifecycle planning, enabling infrastructure owners to extend operational longevity and reduce long-term costs.

Enhance Decision-Making: Leverage real-time data capture and analytics to inform strategic decisions, prioritise maintenance actions, and optimise resource allocation.

Reduce Administrative Overhead: Design integrated platforms that automate documentation, component tracking, and cost identification to minimise time spent on non-technical tasks.

Enable Scalable Deployment: Ensure that developed solutions are adaptable to various asset types and organisational contexts, supporting both small-scale and enterprise-level infrastructure portfolios.

Support Compliance and Verification: Build tools that facilitate regulatory compliance, verification protocols, and audit readiness through structured data and transparent reporting.
